The release of Andrei Sannikau and Zmitser Bandarenka, two political opponents of Belarusian President Aliaksandr Lukashenka, is a good first step, but is not sufficient to restore normal relations with Belarus; the condition for improving relations is the unconditional release of all political prisoners", said Jacek Saryusz-Wolski MEP, Vice-President of the Eastern Partnership Parliamentary Assembly (EURONEST) and Vice-President of the European People's Party. The news of the release of the two major political opponents of President Lukashenka, Andrei Sannikau and Zmitser Bandarenka, came from the Belarusian press. Both men were forced to sign a request for clemency.
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz issued the following statement on the release of two political prisoners in Belarus:
Statement by Mr Jacek PROTASIEWICZ on executionof Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau I have learned with great sadness of the reported execution of Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau. On behalf of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Belarus, I would like to express my most sincere condolences to their families and friends. This death sentence, carried out despite the protests and appeals of their families and the international community, is a heinous act that should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It only shows the inhuman face of President Lukashenka's regime and how little Belarusian authorities care about European values.
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz made the following statement on the use of the death penalty and the reported execution of Uladzislau Kavalyou in Belarus. "I am appalled by the reported execution of Uladzislau Kavalyou in Belarus. On behalf of the European Parliament, I send condolences to the family. I deeply regret that the Belarusian authorities did not listen to the repeated calls to halt the execution by the EU institutions and international human rights organisations. I call on the Belarus authorities to show some human dignity and return the body to the family. Burying it in an anonymous grave is simply disgraceful and unacceptable in 21st century Europe.
Strasbourg, 15 March 2012
European Parliament President Martin Schulz met today in Strasbourg with Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle and among other issues discussed the situation in Belarus. Following the meeting, President Schulz made the following statement: "I am appalled by the deteriorating situation in Belarus regarding human rights and political freedoms. The prolonged hunger strike by jailed opposition activist Syarhey Kavalenka highlights violations of democratic principles and disrespect for the rule of law. Kavalenka's life is now under threat from the hunger strike against his unjustified imprisonment. I urge the Belarusian authorities to release him immediately and unconditionally and to provide him with the necessary medical assistance.
Chairman of the Delegation on the sentence of Ales Bialiatski Brussels, 24 November 2011. In my capacity as Chairman of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Belarus I strongly condemn the sentence of four and a half years of prison served to Ales Bialiatski, the prominent Belarusian human rights defender, Chairman of the human rights organization "Viasna" and Vice-Chairman of FIDH.
The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek made the following statement on the sentencing of Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski. "I condemn the sentencing to four and half years in prison of Ales Bialiatski. The European Parliament is highly concerned about the unjustified prosecution and sentencing of Ales Bialiatski for alleged tax evasion in Belarus. The European Parliament considers the charges against Ales Bialiatski in the trial as politically motivated and unjustified.
MEPs express deep concern at the deteriorating situation of human rights defenders in Belarus. They strongly condemn the recent arrest of and allegations against Ales Bialiatski, Chair of the "Viasna" Human Rights Centre and the Belarusian authorities’ failure to respect the fundamental rights of freedom of assembly and expression.
Among this year's five nominees for one of the world's most prestigious human rights awards is the Arab Spring movement, represented by activists from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria. Other nominees include Belarusian journalist Dzmitry Bandarenka, writer and concentration camp survivor Boris Pahor and a community of Colombian peasants dedicated to peace and reconciliation.
